What to Expect During Your First Visit to a Spine Specialist

28 May, 2025

Feeling intimidated at your first spinal surgery consultation with a spine surgeon is a normal phenomenon. After all, a significant number of people are scared of going to the doctor even for regular checkups. However, there’s no reason to feel uneasy. At The Spine and Scoliosis Center, our highly experienced neurosurgeons are true professionals with decades of experience dealing with spinal conditions and back pain. Our staff is trained in non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures, pain management treatments, and a range of other spinal treatments. Going to see a spine surgeon doesn’t necessarily mean you will need to undergo surgery; many of our patients walk away without any procedures done. It’s always better to have peace of mind that comes from an expert opinion.

What You Can Expect With Our Spinal Specialists

1. Imaging

When you schedule a Spine Surgeon consultation with our clinic, we will first check if you’ve had any imaging tests done. If you haven’t had a recent MRI done within the last six months, we will schedule a consultation with one of our physician’s assistants to schedule your MRI so you can get up-to-date imaging.

    2. MRI Reports

After your MRI reports have been sent in, the spine surgeon will review the images and you will be scheduled for a consultation with one of our board certified spine surgeons.

      3. New Patient Intake

When you check into one of our clinics, you will first fill out some paperwork with the front desk regarding your current injury or condition, basic facts about your situation, and your medical history. After this is completed, the information will be put into our system for evaluation by the nurses and surgeon.

        4. Patient Exam

You will be guided to your exam room by the nurse, and the assigned nurse will ask you questions regarding your back pain. You will explain to her what areas the back pain is occurring in, how long it has been affecting you, the pain levels you experience, and how everything feels.

          5. Analyzing the MRI

After the nurse is done taking down this information, your spine surgeon will come in to go over the MRI images with you. They will discuss any problem points that may be causing your back pain and let you know what conditions may be affecting your spine. Our experienced staff will help you understand the underlying causes of your pain and what the best treatment options may be.

            6. Physical Exam

The surgeon will then do a basic physical exam to check your mobility, vitals, and reaction, along with your senses (to ensure the source of the pain).

              7. Treatment Options

Your surgeon will review all the information with you and then let you know what options you may have to resolve your back pain issues. This can range from anti-inflammatory medication or physical therapy to epidural steroid injections or potentially surgical options if the condition is severe.
